A
country house steeped in history and owned for centuries by one of the
New Worlds founders would be on the list to visit by many tourists,
but to stay in a house that shaped history would truly be a bonus. This
is the proud heritage of Hunstrete House, which was once owned
by the famous Popham family of Maine. The original building on the site
is recorded in the Domesday Book.
Named
by "Conde Naste Traveller" as one of the ten best English
country houses, this 18th century Georgian manor house sits in 92
acres of parkland and deer park on the edge of the Mendips, midway between
Bath and Bristol.
Arriving through the avenue of trees you immediately feel the peace
and elegant charm of this quintessential English country house hotel.
On entering Hunstrete House you will find it beautifully furnished with
antiques, chandeliers, original paintings and collections of fine porcelain
in all the public rooms and bedrooms, (some of which are in a coach
house) equally luxurious.
Hunstrete House is a gourmets delight and many of the regions top chefs
have served their time here. The present incumbent Phillip Hobson
is making his mark using vegetables and herbs organically grown in the
hotels kitchen garden, to accompany the meat and fish dishes for which
he is famous.
This is truly a hotel for all seasons with an outdoor heated pool,
croquet lawn and tennis courts.
Christmas is an unforgettable experience:
log fires, traditional Christmas tree in the hallway and the local choir
singing carols by candlelight. There are enough chimneys for everyone
to have their own personal Father Christmas.
New Year is celebrated in the time honoured way.
